The Story of More Than a Lingua
When Words Take Root, Ideas Bloom.
When language is planted and nurtured, it deepens an understanding of our world, creating a powerful support network with the amazing power to bring us together.
MoreThanALingua started with my own family.
My husband and his family are Portuguese, and communicating with them has its challenges. Although we speak English at home, throughout our marriage, there has always been a mutual desire to rediscover the Portuguese heritage and speak the language.
Where we live in Canada, learning French is important and something I learned and grew up with. We wanted second and third language benefits for our son and enrolled him in French Immersion alongside lessons at home in Portuguese and English. Rather than treating each language as a separate project, I started looking for resources that would help him learn all three at once.
There were plenty of bilingual flashcards and learning materials, but finding trilingual resources was surprisingly difficult. Finding ones where I could choose the languages myself? Even harder.
I kept thinking there had to be a simpler way to bring three languages together in one place. That's where the idea for MoreThanALingua came from.
I wanted to create practical, printable learning cards and other resources that families could adapt to their own lives, whether that meant learning the languages spoken at home, picking up a new language, or helping children grow up with more than one language around them.
What started as something I wanted for my own son and our family, has become something I'd love to share with other families, too. Learning a language is about more than learning words. It's about connecting with people, understanding different cultures, and seeing the world a little differently.
If we can make that journey a little easier — and a little more fun — then we're off to a good start.
Follow along with MoreThanALingua as we bloom and grow.
The plant metaphor
Seed → Root → Grow → Branch → Bloom → Fruit
This becomes a whole brand vocabulary:
-
Seedlings — first words
-
Roots — foundational vocabulary
-
Branches — expanding vocabulary/categories
-
Bloom — sentences & conversation
-
Beyond — stories, reading, culture
-
Garden — customizable 3-language products

There are a few layers to it.
🌱 Literal metaphor
When you are introduced to new words, it is a bit like planting seeds. With exposure, repetition, curiosity, and use, those words take root — they become familiar, remembered, and eventually natural.
🧠 Learning
It suggests that you're not just giving people vocabulary to memorize. You're helping language stick and become a foundation for future learning.
🌍 Language & culture
“Roots” can also mean connection to heritage, culture, family, and identity. That works particularly well because learning another language isn't merely learning another set of words.
🌿 GrowthOnce
Words take root, they can grow into:
-
sentences
-
reading
-
storytelling
-
communication
-
confidence
-
curiosity
-
ideas!
So the path becomes:
Words → Roots → Growth → Connection → A Bigger World
❤️ And there's a subtle emotional meaning
For people with multiple languages, we hope to represent a place where all of your languages have somewhere to belong. And help facilitate a way to connect with family and friends all over the world.
